The cheapest safe option
The cheapest legitimate copy is almost always the Standard Edition bought directly in your platform store, optionally with the 10% Vault loyalty discount if you qualify. Official stores also handle refunds, preload entitlements and launch-day licence errors.
Key resellers and "cheap account" sellers are not equivalent. Call of Duty licences are tied to the store account, and Activision has a long history of revoking keys obtained through fraudulent purchases. A revoked licence takes the game and any platform-locked COD Points with it. The $15 you save is not worth a support ticket you cannot win.
Which edition by platform
- PS5: Digital Standard, or Physical Standard if you want resale. Vault only if you plan to buy BlackCell.
- Xbox: Digital Standard. Play Anywhere gives you the PC build at no extra cost, which is the best value in the entire launch lineup.
- PC: Steam if you want Steam friends and workshop-adjacent features; Battle.net if that is where your Blizzard wallet and friends already live. Performance is identical.
- Switch 2: Standard digital. It is a native build with cross-play, but the Vault cosmetics are not worth the premium on a handheld.
- Returning CoD owner: Check the Vault loyalty discount before checkout. It is easy to miss and applies at the store level.
Refunds and preorders
Sony and Microsoft generally allow preorder cancellation before release and have their own refund windows after launch. Steam's refund window is two hours of playtime and 14 days from purchase, which early access can complicate: campaign early access time counts. If you are unsure, buy Standard, test the campaign and multiplayer separately, and upgrade to Vault later for $30.
