The three games before this one
Modern Warfare (2019) rebooted the series with a grounded tone and a new Task Force 141. Price recruits Gaz and Soap, the Urzikstan campaign introduces Farah and Hadir, and the game ends with the formation of the unit that will carry the trilogy.
Modern Warfare II (2022) expands the cast. Soap joins 141, Ghost returns, Laswell runs CIA station operations, and the Las Almas cartel arc introduces Valeria Garza, El Sin Nombre. The game ends with Shepherd's betrayal and the death of Roach and Ghost in the original continuity — but this is the reboot, so the details differ. Graves and Shadow Company turn on 141, and the team goes underground.
Modern Warfare III (2023) brings Makarov back and ends with Soap's death in the Channel Tunnel and Price killing Shepherd in revenge. That is the point of departure for MW4: Price is a fugitive, 141 is disbanded, and the only people still talking to him are Laswell, Valeria and whoever needs a weapon badly enough to hire him.
Where MW4 starts
North Korea invades the peninsula. Hajin City falls. A young South Korean squad, backed by embedded US Marines, fights a delaying action while the regime's internal politics turn into a palace coup.
At the same time, Price is moving a package for The Archer in exchange for information. Valeria brokers the deal. Ghost and Gaz are sent to bring Price in. Laswell keeps the channel open but is losing control of the operation. The two stories collide in the final act on the Russian border.
Who is The Archer?
The Archer is an arms broker played by Mads Mikkelsen. He is not a nationalist and he is not a true believer; he is a buyer of leverage. The weapon being moved through Mumbai is the object everyone wants, and The Archer is the only person who knows who is paying for it.
He is also the campaign's most effective villain because he does not need to win a war. He needs the war to continue long enough to sell the thing that ends it.

| Valeria Garza | Returns as Price's reluctant ally, dies in Mission 7 |
| Vladimir Makarov | Returns, dies early in Mission 2 |
| Soap | Does not return; died in Modern Warfare III |
| Shepherd | Dead; killed by Price at the end of MWIII |
The new cast
The South Korean storyline introduces Pvt. Park Hyun-jun, Lieutenant Ko Jin-hyuk, Commander Ri Ju-young and the Sierra-1 squad. Their missions carry the invasion half of the campaign and set up the Hajin exclusion zone in DMZ. Several of them become playable operators in multiplayer, which is why the campaign rewards include Cho, Park, Kal, Dunn and others.
The themes
The rebooted trilogy has always been about rules: who gets to break them, who pays for them, and whether the mission justifies the cost. MW4 pushes that to its conclusion. Price spends the game being hunted by the people he trained, for a killing he believes was necessary. The campaign does not acquit him. It shows what the choice costs and lets him pay it.
That is also why the ending is not a cliffhanger in the traditional sense. The war story resolves; the character story resolves; what remains is the institutional wreckage, which DMZ inherits.
