The beta tier list
| Tier | Weapon | Why |
|---|---|---|
| S | ISO Nightshade (SMG) | Low recoil, high mobility, best close-range pick |
| S | M4 (AR) | Lowest-risk AR, effective at almost every range |
| S | Kastov 762 (AR) | Highest damage per shot, rewards recoil control |
| S | PPSh-41 (SMG) | Fastest close-range kill potential, built for rushing |
| S | KG-7 Vulcan (Sniper) | One-shot potential and quick follow-ups |
| A | Finn LMG | Large magazine, holds sightlines, slow mobility |
| A | Hyeon Burst (AR) | Deletes on a clean burst, unforgiving on a miss |
| A | Han 86 (AR) | Balanced damage, accuracy and handling |
| B | Krait P68 (Pistol) | Strong backup, outclassed by primaries |
| B | Rezi 12 (Shotgun) | Devastating inside 10 metres, useless beyond |
| B | Type 73 (LMG) | Balanced but does nothing best |
| C | MAR-9 (Marksman) | Inconsistent against automatic weapons |
| C | Oris 8.6 (Marksman) | Precise and hard-hitting, too slow for most fights |
That is 13 multiplayer weapons. The launch game has 33, and 11 of those were not in the beta, so the top of this list can move within a patch.
Best gun by role
| Role | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Aggressive SMG | ISO Nightshade | Best combination of fire rate, recoil and sprint-out |
| All-round AR | M4 | Unlocked at Level 14 and never a bad choice |
| Damage AR | Kastov 762 | 7.62 damage breaks through cover and armour faster |
| Bullet hose | PPSh-41 | Highest close-range ceiling if you can control it |
| Anchor / lane holder | Finn LMG | Big magazine, stable at range |
| Sniper | KG-7 Vulcan | The only beta sniper that reliably one-shots |
| Budget marksman | Oris 8.6 | Unlocks at Level 11; strong if you hit first |
| Backup | Krait P68 | Best pistol in the beta |
Unlock order that actually matters
| Level | Unlock | Priority |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | ISO Nightshade, Han 86, Rezi 12, Finn LMG, MAR-9, KG-7 Vulcan | Start with ISO and KG-7 |
| 11 | Oris 8.6 | Skip unless you like marksman rifles |
| 14 | M4 | The best all-round gun in the game |
| 21 | Hyeon Burst | Good, but the M4 is more consistent |
| 25 | Astaroth .57 | Second sniper option |
| 30 | PPSh-41 | Unlock if you rush |
| 34 | Kastov 762 | The damage upgrade for AR players |
| 46 | X-58 Nyx | Late SMG; not worth rushing |
| 50 | Signal 50 | Late sniper; only for dedicated snipers |
| 55 | Cronen Squall | Endgame AR; strong but not mandatory |
If you only have a few hours in launch week, unlock the ISO Nightshade (Level 4), the M4 (14) and the Kastov 762 (34). Those three cover close, mid and long-range AR play.
Attachment priorities
M4: recoil control and bullet velocity first, then ADS speed. The M4's strength is consistency; do not turn it into a close-range SMG.
Kastov 762: control the vertical recoil before adding damage. A muzzle and underbarrel that reduce kick matter more than a bigger magazine. The Kastov Arc Apex Attachment replaces the barrel with a disruption pulse that can incapacitate infantry and destabilise vehicles; it is powerful but changes the gun's role.
ISO Nightshade: sprint-out and ADS speed. Range is secondary because the gun is meant to fight inside 15 metres. The ISO Trace Apex Attachment adds RFID tracking on hits, which is excellent for finishing runners.
PPSh-41: magazine size and hipfire. With bloom removed, the PPSh's close-range spread is predictable; build it for movement and reload speed.
KG-7 Vulcan: aim-down-sight speed and flinch resistance. Do not over-invest in stability; the beta sniper rewards quick scopes and repositioning.
Finn LMG: recoil and magazine. It is an anchor weapon; mobility attachments are wasted on it.
Apex Attachments worth knowing
- Kastov Arc — disruption pulse barrel, anti-infantry and anti-vehicle utility.
- ISO Trace — RFID ammunition that tracks a hit target through the optic.
- Rezi Enforcer — pump-action cycling with explosive slugs in a side-saddle.
- Oris Razor — three quick-access throwing knives mounted to the receiver.
- M4 Hurricane — top-loading 5.7mm bullpup conversion with a higher fire rate.
- Han X20 Skybreaker — 20mm airburst launcher that flushes cover.
Apex Attachments do not use a normal attachment slot, so they are close to free value once unlocked. The trade-off is that most block two or three standard slots.
What will change after launch
Launch balance patches typically hit the most-used AR and SMG first. The M4 and ISO Nightshade are the obvious nerf candidates because they are both easy to use and statistically strong. The Kastov and PPSh are more likely to survive unchanged because they demand more skill.
Do not spend all your Gunsmith time on one gun in the first 72 hours. Level the M4, ISO and Kastov together so a nerf does not reset your entire setup.
FAQ
What is the best gun in MW4?
The M4 is the safest all-round pick, the ISO Nightshade is the best close-range SMG, and the Kastov 762 is the best damage AR. Which one is 'best' depends on the map and your recoil control.
How many weapons does MW4 have at launch?
33: 24 primary weapons (8 ARs, 5 SMGs, 2 shotguns, 3 LMGs, 3 marksman rifles, 3 snipers), 8 secondary weapons (4 pistols, 4 launchers) and 1 melee weapon.
When does the M4 unlock?
Player Level 14. The ISO Nightshade, KG-7 Vulcan, Rezi 12 and Finn LMG unlock at Level 4.
Are Apex Attachments pay-to-win?
No. They unlock by levelling the weapon, and Vault blueprints are cosmetic variants of the same base guns. Apex Attachments do not consume a normal slot, but they block other attachment slots.
