MW4 best settings: clarity first, frames second

Modern Warfare 4 targets 90 FPS at Recommended specs. These settings protect that target without turning the game into a blur, and the same order of operations works on console.

Why FOV 100–110

Call of Duty's default FOV is narrow. At 80, you lose peripheral awareness in a game where mantle slides and pipe climbs put players above and beside you. 100–105 is the standard competitive range; 110+ helps on Ground War and DMZ but makes distant targets smaller.

PC also has Enhanced FOV, which uses lens effects to widen the edges without changing the centre FOV. It is useful if you like a narrow aim picture but want more peripheral vision. Try it at 100 and compare in the firing range.

Graphics order of operations

1. Resolution — native first. 2. Upscaling — Quality at 1440p, Balanced at 4K. Do not use Ultra Performance unless you are chasing 240 Hz. 3. Texture quality — as high as your VRAM allows; this is the biggest visual gain per frame. 4. Shadows and reflections — drop to Medium/Low. They cost frames and add little target clarity. 5. Ray tracing — off unless you are on the 16 GB VRAM tier. It is supported in Campaign, Multiplayer and DMZ. 6. Motion blur, film grain, chromatic aberration — off. They hurt visibility. 7. Sharpness — use the global sharpness slider sparingly; over-sharpening adds shimmer.

Weapon VFX masking keeps muzzle smoke out of your aim point, so you do not need to lower effects quality just to see targets. The split world/weapon depth of field lets you keep the weapon blur without blurring the map.

Latency and input

  • NVIDIA Reflex: On + Boost if available.
  • Sub-frame mouse polling: On. It increases aiming precision on supported mice.
  • Mouse sensitivity: start at 4–6 in-game at 800 DPI, then tune in the firing range.
  • Controller: sensitivity 6–8, ADS multiplier 0.8–1.0, deadzone 0.05, vibration off.
  • FOV and ADS scaling: if targets feel too small, lower FOV by 5 rather than raising sensitivity.
  • Frame generation: off for multiplayer. It looks smooth but adds input latency; use it for campaign and 4K ray tracing.

Console settings

  • Prefer Performance mode over Quality. A stable frame rate wins gunfights.
  • Enable 120 Hz and VRR if your TV supports them.
  • Turn off motion blur and film grain.
  • Set FOV to 100 if the console version exposes it.
  • Use a wired connection or 5 GHz Wi-Fi; the difference in packet loss is larger than any graphics setting.

Audio

Footsteps and reloads are directional cues. Use headphones, lower music volume, and raise the effects and dialogue mix. If your headset has a competitive preset, use it; if not, stereo is more reliable than virtual surround for locating footsteps.

Benchmark, then stop tweaking

Modern Warfare 4 includes a built-in benchmark that runs a simulated multiplayer sequence and reports average FPS, CPU and GPU timings, ping and input latency. Run it after every major change, write down the result, and stop when you hit 90 FPS at a clarity level you are happy with. Chasing the last 5% usually costs more visibility than it gains.

If the game stutters instead of running slowly, the problem is usually shaders or storage, not settings. See the fixes guide.

FAQ

What is the best FOV in MW4?

100–110. Start at 105 for multiplayer; 110+ helps on Ground War and DMZ but shrinks distant targets.

Should I turn ray tracing on?

Only on the 16 GB VRAM tier. On mid-range cards, ray tracing costs too many frames for the visibility it adds.

Does MW4 support DLSS and FSR?

Yes. It supports NVIDIA DLSS 4.5, AMD FSR Redstone, Intel XeSS 3 and Filmic SMAA T2X.

How do I get 90 FPS?

Use the Recommended spec tier, Quality upscaling at 1440p, Medium shadows, ray tracing off, and run the built-in benchmark to confirm. The official target is 90 FPS at Recommended specs on High.
